Calcean Achieves GreenCircle Biobased Certification
GADSDEN, Ala. – Calcean Minerals and Materials, LLC, a breakthrough renewable materials company headquartered in Gadsden, is pleased to announce its newest qualification in the category of sustainability: GreenCircle Biobased Content Certification.
Calcean manufactures biogenic oolitic aragonite, one of the world’s purest forms of the ocean’s naturally precipitated calcium carbonate. Not only is it renewable, but it also provides a number of performance benefits across a variety of industries including, but not limited to: glass, agriculture, play sand, landscaping sand, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals/nutraceuticals, paints, coatings, bioplastics, and nutrient remediation.
GreenCircle Certified, LLC, issued the certifications in May 2022 for each of Calcean’s oolitic aragonite products – SandyCal, OceanCal-U, and OceanCal-S. Each product has met GreenCircle’s independent, third-party evaluation to be certified for Biobased Content. This standard declares that the biobased content in each product is derived from renewable sources.

GreenCircle is an internationally recognized third-party certification entity that provides independent verification that sustainability claims related to an organization’s products and operations are honest, valid, and verified.
“GreenCircle Certified, LLC was established to ensure specificity in third-party certification after encountering many unsubstantiated claims in the marketplace,” says Tad Radzinski, Certification Officer at GreenCircle . “As today’s consumers become more informed, there is an increasing demand for honesty and transparency from potential suppliers. Third-party certification demonstrates a product or operation is in compliance with its sustainability claim. To receive this certification, Calcean underwent a rigorous audit and assessment process, which included an audit of their bills of material, processes, and manufacturing site. Calcean will undergo annual recertification with GreenCircle as well as pursue additional certifications in the future.

By obtaining third-party certification from GreenCircle, we can effectively communicate to our customers that oolitic aragonite is a verified biobased material. Our customers can rest assured that these claims are fully substantiated and have been verified and certified by an independent third-party.”
Further, due to oolitic aragonite’s GreenCircle verified biobased content, oolitic aragonite can contribute to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) points, which is important for green buildings. All of Calcean’s products meet the requirements for LEED 4.1 Sourcing of Raw Materials: Biobased materials. The products are valued at 50 percent of cost multiplied by the biobased content.
As part of its certification, Calcean will be featured on GreenCircle Certified’s website as one of its Brands You Can Trust (Brands You Can Trust — GreenCircle Certified), marking Calcean as a standout company for sustainability.
“It is important to us to build trust with our customers by providing substantiation for our environmental claims, and GreenCircle provides the qualified independent verification needed to do so,” notes Dr. Myers.
In addition to GreenCircle’s Biobased Certification, Calcean has also obtained a third-party verified Life Cycle Analysis (ISO 14044) and a third-party verified Carbon Footprint Analysis (ISO 14067), which determined oolitic aragonite has a negative carbon footprint. This means it removes more carbon from the atmosphere than the harvesting emits. Calcean’s GreenCircle certification reflects positively on the steps the company is taking toward sustainability for multiple industries nationwide.
